A New Zealand Response to Challenge: The War at Home

Author(s): Ruth Naumann

Social Studies

An exciting activity based approach to New Zealand's heritage. WWII was a major challenge to the NZ Home Front. While thousands of New Zealanders were overseas in the armed forces those at home had to respond to a crisis. Special organisations, such as the Home Guard, Emergency Precautions Service and Women's War Service Auxiliary, with measures such as blackouts and censorship, were developed to protect people and property. This book looks at some of the main responses to what Peter Fraser, in 1945 described as six long, anxious, worrying, dangerous and tragic years. The challenge to the people of New Zealand were great. Society would never be the same.
