Tsunami: Case Study of an Extreme Natural Event

Author(s): Ruth Naumann

Social Studies | Geography

Tsunami introduces the idea of Extreme Natural Events and then moves to focus on tsunamis. After looking at what causes a tsunami, it examines the 2009 Samoan event. The book also covers how New Zealand is affected by not only the Samoan event, but the threat of tsunamis in general.

Tsunami has been designed to be used in both Social Studies and Geography classes. It is packed with new and engaging resources and imagery.

Social Studies classes can use this book to concentrate on the significance of the event. The causes and effects, people’s reaction in response to a community challenge, and how
people’s past actions impact on the lives of those living in the present.

Year 11 NCEA Level 1 Geography students can use this book for a more in-depth study of a tsunami as a result of an earthquake. By investigating the 2009 tsunami in Samoa, students will be able to demonstrate a geographic understanding of an extreme natural event and the human response to it.

Activities for students are designed around key competencies to encourage the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values. Teachers can choose to have students work on tasks as individuals, groups or as a class.
