The Literacy Book has been designed as a workbook for students at NCEA Level 1 Literacy using the new English-medium Unit Standards released in 2021 and 2022; and into general usage by Level 1 students. It provides supplementary lessons for students who needing additional practice with English skills. This book looks at both reading and writing standards, and addresses the skills contained in the performance criteria by giving explanations, examples, and practice for each skill. The combination of reading and writing skills addressed in The Literacy Book reflect the complementary nature of each one, preparing students for daily life both in and out of the classroom. After completing the workbook exercises, students should have acquired all the skills required to be comfortable writing in any situation, as well as reading and responding to texts in a range of genres, while adhering to the updated Literacy Unit Standard assessments.

Denny Newburn has an extensive teaching career and has spent time on multiple teams specialising in curriculum development for secondary students who struggle with reading. She is currently working as a PLD facilitator in the Gisborne area, specialising in Literacy and Special Needs Education.
